Precursors to the Great Awakenings
1600s – Early revivals in Europe (foundation movements before the Awakenings).
1727 – Moravian prayer revival, Herrnhut, Germany.
First Great Awakening (1730s–1740s)
1734 – Jonathan Edwards, Northampton, Massachusetts revival.
1739 – George Whitefield visits the American colonies.
1740–1742 – Explosive church growth: 150 new Congregational Churches, 30,000 members added.
1742 – Cambuslang Awakening, Scotland (George Whitefield).
Second Great Awakening (1790s–1840s)
1799 – Johannes Theodorus van der Kemp arrives in South Africa (London Missionary Society).
1801 – Cane Ridge Revival, Kentucky (Barton W. Stone).
1803 – Van der Kemp establishes Bethelsdorp, Cape Colony.
1817 – Robert Moffat arrives in South Africa (London Missionary Society).
1825–1835 – Charles Grandison Finney leads revivals in the United States.
c.1839 – David Livingstone arrives in South Africa.
Third Great Awakening (1857–early 1900s)
1857–1859 – Prayer Revival, Fulton Street, New York (spreads globally).
1860–1861 – South African Revival, Cape Colony (Andrew Murray).
1904–1905 – Welsh Revival (Evan Roberts).
1906 – Azusa Street Revival, Los Angeles (William J. Seymour) – influenced by reports from Wales,
catalytic for global Pentecostalism.
Later 20th-Century Revivals
1914–1935 – John G. Lake’s healing ministry and church planting in South Africa and the United States.
1949–1952 – Hebrides Revival, Scotland (Lewis Islands, Duncan Campbell).
